If you're connecting to a university connected to AARNet, connecting to IRC via aarnet.irc.streetgeek.com.au will direct you to only "on-net" servers which may be unmetered/free for you to access at uni.
If you don't know what the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 is, you probably only have IPv4, so IPv6 support doesn't matter for you. If you have IPv6 internet connectivity, irc.streetgeek.com.au has the appropriate AAAA records to allow you to connect with IPv6. Most clients will prefer connecting via IPv6 than IPv4 automatically.
There's also ipv4.irc.streetgeek.com.au and ipv6.irc.streetgeek.com.au which only have records for IPv4 and IPv6 respectively.
When you're at StreetGeek, irc.streetgeek.com.au will redirect to the LAN IRC server. However it is linked to all the other servers for the duration of the LAN.
Connecting with XChat on Windows
1: Download the latest build of XChat for Windows from Silverex.
2: Install it.
3: Start it. You'll get a network list. Enter your name. "Nickname" is what you come up on IRC as (there can't be any spaces in this name), "Username" you leave as is, and "Real Name" is your real name, and can contain spaces.
4: Press "Add" to make a new network. Type in "StreetGeek" then press Enter.
5: Press "Edit".
6: Edit the server list to say "irc.streetgeek.com.au" (by default, it'll say "newserver/6667") and press Enter. The only thing in that list should be "irc.streetgeek.com.au".
7: Tick "Autoconnect to this network on startup".
8: In favourite channels, write "#streetgeek". Your window should now look like this:
9: Press "Close" then tick "Skip Network List on Startup" then press "Connect".
10: Wait a moment, and you're on IRC.
micolousedit: added pretty pictures and updated serverlist a couple of times.
